Auto Theft

Be prepared with several documents to claim a stolen vehicle. Most auto insurers won’t accept a claim involving theft without a police report. You’ll also need to include a list of the personal items that were in the car when it was stolen. Some insurers will also want to know who had access to the car and where any extra copies of the keys were kept.

Did you know that in 2018, nearly 750,000 cars were stolen in the United States. While that number sounds high, you have just a .23% of having your car stolen. Will your insurance policy cover theft?

Whether or not car insurance covers theft, depends on what is stolen. There are various types of theft. Read to learn what types of theft are covered and how to ensure you are insured.

Will your Car Insurance Provide Coverage For a Stolen Car?

The comprehensive insurance part of your auto insurance will provide coverage if your car is stolen. It is important to discuss what your individual policy covers with your insurance provider stolen cars.

Comprehensive coverage includes damage that is not caused by collision or natural disasters. Comprehensive coverage is what will pay for a new car in the event yours is stolen provided the limit on your policy covers the full value of your car after you pay your deductible.

Comprehensive coverage is not required in any state, so you will need to review your policy to ensure you have it or you can add it to any auto policy. If you lease or finance your vehicle, the lender may require proof of comprehensive coverage. Theft insurance is an added cost, but will save you from being out of pocket the full cost of your vehicle in the event  it is stolen.

It is important to know that even if your comprehensive coverage covers your stolen vehicle, it may not cover the belongings in the vehicle that were stolen too. The best way to insure your personal belongings is through a renters or homeowners policy.

Homeowners policies do set a limit on personal property, so high-end electronics and pricey jewelry may not be fully covered.
